I chose this as my Amazon “First Read” for April because the write-up made it seem very intriguing: part literary novel, part psychological thriller about a former military intelligence officer from China who marries an American and moves to the Bay area and then begins an online relationship with a secret admirer leading to disastrous results.I’m about a third of the way through; and I’m struggling. For me, the problem is with the writing: it's wholly expository and limits itself only to what the main character is thinking and feeling about her past and what’s going on in the present. There’s barely any dialogue; but there’s a ton of backstory. There’s a whole lot of telling; but very little showing. So it’s difficult, at least for me, to get caught up in the story. And I’m having some problems with believability. She’s a former military intelligence officer from China (and therefore supposedly pretty savvy), and yet she willingly enters into an e-mail or chat relationship (we’re not quite sure which) with someone she doesn’t know who’s obviously been spying on her—putting her marriage at risk? Seems highly unlikely.Potential readers might want to give the “Look Inside” a thorough examination before deciding whether to proceed with “The Secret Talker.” It's hard to describe the story but on the surface it's a tale of a woman dissatisfied with her somewhat older professor husband. She begins an emotional affair via text with someone unknown who's been watching her closely from someplace nearby. That alone is intriguing but then as the person questions her and seems to know her intimately, the secret admirer pulls back for us layers and layers of lies in the life that Homgmei has lived.She is a educated Chinese woman with a American husband with whom she communicates over the fridge with post-it notes because they've stopped talking to each other. But the questioner reveals a pattern of lifelong infidelity-- and a heap of other lies and hidden events. One after the other, layers are peeled back like the shells of an onion until we get to know the real Hongmei. And we discover the true story of not only her life but that of her family.In a way, this is like an " epistolary novel" done in texts though,that are described but not written out as a letter would be. It makes for the unique quality of unidirectional communication, that is, the letter ( or text) is speaking and there is no banter or immediate response from the other person except a reaction to the words. This device makes the revelations in the story somehow more impactful.I can see why this author is a huge bestseller in China and why her books are successful as films. The writing is visual and sometimes a gut punch in it's flatly-stated shock information. Best novel I've read in a while.
